National Orthodontic Health Month

October is typically known by Americans as the month in which kids of all ages have loads of fun collecting candy and other sweet treats while out trick-or-treating on Halloween. But many people are unaware that October is also National Orthodontic Health Month. This month-long observance, which is sponsored by the American Association of Orthodontists, is designed to bring attention to how very important good orthodontic health is.

During the entire month of October, orthodontists, dentists, educators, teachers and others across the country help raise public awareness of how important it is to have a healthy, straight smile. At Family Dentistry of West Bloomfield, our doctors and staff will be observing National Orthodontic Health Month by speaking to our patients about how important good orthodontic and dental health is. Even though orthodontics and general dentistry are two separate fields, they’re interconnected in many ways. For example, when the teeth are in proper alignment, it is easy to thoroughly clean the teeth, to dramatically reduce the risk for developing tooth decay.

Another example of how dentistry is connected to orthodontics has to do with excessive wear and tear on teeth. When the teeth are misaligned or crooked, the protective outer layer of teeth called enamel can become worn down prematurely due to the teeth not meeting correctly. By bringing the teeth into proper alignment, the enamel of the teeth is preserved to help keep the teeth strong and healthy.

At our West Bloomfield dentistry practice, general dentistry is at the foundation of the wide range of treatments and procedures we offer. Our goal is to help our patients preserve their natural teeth for as long as possible so they can enjoy having attractive & healthy smiles for a lifetime. For our patients with misaligned or crooked teeth, we offer orthodontic treatment using conventional braces or clear, removable aligners. But prior to undergoing orthodontic treatment, the teeth and gums must be healthy first.
